Moving On -  Helpful Transition Hints for Seniors - Eric McCartney SRES®  Real Estate Broker

Be Kind to yourself or the person you’re helping move.

Remember, moving is not an easy process.  It presents a significant change that can be both physically exhausting and also emotionally draining.  So, remember these thoughts as you start this new stage in your life.

· Be sensitive to yourself or the relative that you are helping move.

· When was the last time I used this?

· Do I own another item that can serve the same purpose as this one?

· Is it in good shape?   Will it last for a long time?

· Does it need repair, and if so, how much will it cost and is it worth the cost?

· Do I know someone else who would benefit a lot more from its use?

· Does it serve a purpose in the new life that I’m moving to?

How to “Right-size” and Keep Your Sanity

Advantages to “Rightsizing” your home

So you’ve come to the realization that your present home no longer suites your needs.  The downsizing process certainly has some very practical advantages.

· Lower mortgage payments and increased cash flow

· Lower utility bills, reduced consumption and maintenance costs.

· Having more time for the people and things that you enjoy.

· Minimized stress and increased personal safety.

Choosing what items to take

One of the hardest parts of downsizing is just getting started.  Start small.  Pick a shelf, a drawer or a single cupboard.  Start with a spare room or basement.  Take a walk through your home and evaluate.

Preparing yourself to Downsize and Packing

Finding a new home for items that you will not be taking with you can often be a bit of a challenge.  Contact your family and friends.  If someone is planning to go off to college, offer them a bed or some pots and pans.  Using your resources and being prepared can make the entire experience a lot easier.

· Collect 3 bins and label them Give Away, Throw Away and Keep.

· Invest in clear bags for recycling, orange bags for donations and green bags for garbage.

· Contact a reliable moving company.  Many will help with the packing and unpacking or if you require storage for a short period of time.

· For larger items consider a garage sale or selling through the local paper, kijji, …

· Arrange for pick up of your donations if possible.

· For more valuable items consider an auctioneer or putting them on consignment.

· Be sure to label your boxes, it will make unpacking a lot easier.
